Posterior accuracy and calibration under misspecification in Bayesian generalized linear models
Generalized linear models (GLMs) are popular for data-analysis in almost all
quantitative sciences, but the choice of likelihood family and link function is
often difficult. This motivates the search for likelihoods and links that
minimize the impact of potential misspecification. We perform a large-scale
simulation study on double-bounded and lower-bounded response data where we
systematically vary both true and assumed likelihoods and links. In contrast to
previous studies, we also study posterior calibration and uncertainty metrics
in addition to point-estimate accuracy. Our results indicate that certain
likelihoods and links can be remarkably robust to misspecification, performing
almost on par with their respective true counterparts. Additionally, normal
likelihood models with identity link (i.e., linear regression) often achieve
calibration comparable to the more structurally faithful alternatives, at least
in the studied scenarios. On the basis of our findings, we provide practical
suggestions for robust likelihood and link choices in GLMs
Prediction can be safely used as a proxy for explanation in causally consistent Bayesian generalized linear models
Bayesian modeling provides a principled approach to quantifying uncertainty
in model parameters and model structure and has seen a surge of applications in
recent years. Within the context of a Bayesian workflow, we are concerned with
model selection for the purpose of finding models that best explain the data,
that is, help us understand the underlying data generating process. Since we
rarely have access to the true process, all we are left with during real-world
analyses is incomplete causal knowledge from sources outside of the current
data and model predictions of said data. This leads to the important question
of when the use of prediction as a proxy for explanation for the purpose of
model selection is valid. We approach this question by means of large-scale
simulations of Bayesian generalized linear models where we investigate various
causal and statistical misspecifications. Our results indicate that the use of
prediction as proxy for explanation is valid and safe only when the models
under consideration are sufficiently consistent with the underlying causal
structure of the true data generating process
Some models are useful, but how do we know which ones? Towards a unified Bayesian model taxonomy
Probabilistic (Bayesian) modeling has experienced a surge of applications in
almost all quantitative sciences and industrial areas. This development is
driven by a combination of several factors, including better probabilistic
estimation algorithms, flexible software, increased computing power, and a
growing awareness of the benefits of probabilistic learning. However, a
principled Bayesian model building workflow is far from complete and many
challenges remain. To aid future research and applications of a principled
Bayesian workflow, we ask and provide answers for what we perceive as two
fundamental questions of Bayesian modeling, namely (a) "What actually is a
Bayesian model?" and (b) "What makes a good Bayesian model?". As an answer to
the first question, we propose the PAD model taxonomy that defines four basic
kinds of Bayesian models, each representing some combination of the assumed
joint distribution of all (known or unknown) variables (P), a posterior
approximator (A), and training data (D). As an answer to the second question,
we propose ten utility dimensions according to which we can evaluate Bayesian
models holistically, namely, (1) causal consistency, (2) parameter
recoverability, (3) predictive performance, (4) fairness, (5) structural
faithfulness, (6) parsimony, (7) interpretability, (8) convergence, (9)
estimation speed, and (10) robustness. Further, we propose two example utility
decision trees that describe hierarchies and trade-offs between utilities
depending on the inferential goals that drive model building and testing
Ecdysozoan mitogenomics: evidence for a common origin of the legged invertebrates, the Panarthropoda
Ecdysozoa is the recently recognized clade of molting animals that comprises the vast majority of extant animal species and the most important invertebrate model organismsâthe fruit fly and the nematode worm. Evolutionary relationships within the ecdysozoans remain, however, unresolved, impairing the correct interpretation of comparative genomic studies. In particular, the affinities of the three Panarthropoda phyla (Arthropoda, Onychophora, and Tardigrada) and the position of Myriapoda within Arthropoda (Mandibulata vs. Myriochelata hypothesis) are among the most contentious issues in animal phylogenetics. To elucidate these relationships, we have determined and analyzed complete or nearly complete mitochondrial genome sequences of two Tardigrada, Hypsibius dujardini and Thulinia sp. (the first genomes to date for this phylum); one Priapulida, Halicryptus spinulosus; and two Onychophora, Peripatoides sp. and Epiperipatus biolleyi; and a partial mitochondrial genome sequence of the Onychophora Euperipatoides kanagrensis. Tardigrada mitochondrial genomes resemble those of the arthropods in term of the gene order and strand asymmetry, whereas Onychophora genomes are characterized by numerous gene order rearrangements and strand asymmetry variations. In addition, Onychophora genomes are extremely enriched in A and T nucleotides, whereas Priapulida and Tardigrada are more balanced. Phylogenetic analyses based on concatenated amino acid coding sequences support a monophyletic origin of the Ecdysozoa and the position of Priapulida as the sister group of a monophyletic Panarthropoda (Tardigrada plus Onychophora plus Arthropoda). The position of Tardigrada is more problematic, most likely because of long branch attraction (LBA). However, experiments designed to reduce LBA suggest that the most likely placement of Tardigrada is as a sister group of Onychophora. The same analyses also recover monophyly of traditionally recognized arthropod lineages such as Arachnida and of the highly debated clade Mandibulata
The Malawi Active Fault Database: an onshore-offshore database for regional assessment of seismic hazard and tectonic evolution
We present the Malawi Active Fault Database (MAFD), an open-access (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5507190) geospatial database of 113 fault traces in Malawi and neighboring Tanzania and Mozambique. Malawi is located within the East African Riftâs Western Branch where active fault identification is challenging because chronostratigraphic data are rare, and/or faults are buried and so do not have a surface expression. The MAFD therefore includes any fault that has evidence for displacement during Cenozoic East African rifting, or is buried beneath the rift valley and is favorably oriented to the regional stresses. To identify such faults, we consider a multidisciplinary dataset: high resolution digital elevation models, previous geological mapping, field observations, seismic reflection surveys from offshore Lake Malawi, and aeromagnetic and gravity data. The MAFD includes faults throughout Malawi, where seismic risk is increasing because of population growth and its seismically vulnerable building stock. We also investigate the database as a sample of the normal fault population in an incipient continental rift. We cannot reject the null hypothesis that the distribution of fault lengths in the MAFD is described by a power law, which is consistent with Malawiâs relatively thick seismogenic layer (30-40 km), low (<8%) regional extensional strain, and deformation localization (50-75%) across relatively long hard-linked border faults. Cumulatively, we highlight the importance of integrating onshore and offshore geological and geophysical data to develop active fault databases along the East African Rift and similar continental settings, both to understand the regional seismic hazard and tectonic evolution

Intermediaries as Facilitators of Open Innovation : A case study on Science Park Jönköpingâs SME network
Background: Open innovation is a recently discussed concept, which contrasts the traditional way of innovating. After several large companies have already adopted this approach successfully, the academic debate continues about possible application of this concept for SMEs. Moreover, current literature highlights the importance of intermediated networks to support open innovation among these SMEs. Purpose: This study determines in what way intermediaries act as facilitators for open innovation in SME networks. The literature suggests several different functions that intermediaries execute, without being clear about the connection to open innovation. Therefore, we critically examined Science Park Jönköping as a potential facilitator for open innovation. Method: We conducted a single-case study on Science Park Jönköpingâs SME network and collected qualitative data through in-depth interviews. The analysis of the data includes interpretations of the codes of the interviews as well as aggregations of these codes in an inductive way. Conclusion: Our study differentiates between two service levels Science Park Jönköping provides. Regarding the in-house environment, we conclude that intermediaries facilitate open innovation among SMEs through providing a supportive environment based on geographical proximity. As far as the networking projects are concerned, we conclude that regional intermediaries might be hindered to facilitate open innovation among SMEs due to the characteristic of their networks
